As a holistic nutritionist who believes in real food, I could not be happier to have a nourishing meal that everyone enjoys.
Once the fall weather sets in getting fresh tomatoes is basically out of the question here in Missouri.
Luckily, canned tomatoes work great to make this healthy and easy homemade tomato soup recipe!
Is homemade tomato soup healthy?
Homemade tomato soup is a healthier option than store-bought canned soup. The store-bought ones can have some poor quality ingredients that are best to be avoided.
Sugar is a typical ingredient in many items on the store shelves, including tomato soup. Avoiding processed sugars is one of my first tips for cleaning up your diet and maintaining health.
You will also find unhealthy seed oils in the store versions. These oils are very detrimental to health. They promote inflammation. Removing seed oils from one’s diet is my #1 tip for health.
If you need to be gluten-free, canned soup may contain wheat flour. The gluten-free versions can still sugars and seed oils.
By making tomato soup at home, it is possible to control the ingredients so you have a healthy and easy soup.
Ingredients
Canned Tomatoes – For this recipe I use organic, no salt added tomatoes. I also suggest selecting brands that have BPA-free linings.
Broth – I prefer to use my homemade broth for this recipe, it is not hard to make and you will know what is in it. If you are going to use storebought broth, check the ingredients. The broth on the store shelf can have added sugar and MSG, among other things.
Butter – Butter from grass-fed cows will provide you with the most bang for your buck as far as fat quality and vitamin content is concerned. Kerrygold is the go-to in my house. It can be found at most larger grocery stores.
Onions – I typically use whatever I have on hand. Yellow, red, or white all work great for this recipe.
Garlic – To increase the benefits of the compounds found in garlic, chop it first.
Herbs – Dried Italian herbs work great. Individual herbs such as basil, oregano, or thyme all work too.
Salt and pepper
Tools for making homemade tomato soup
Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot – an enameled cast iron or stainless steel pot works great for this recipe.
Blender, food processor, or immersion blender – The immersion blender would be my first choice so ease of use. I do not have one so I use my Vitamix Blender. If using a food processor, be sure to work in small batches.

What to eat with healthy tomato soup
Homemade tomato soup goes with so many other foods. Here are a few ideas for you:
- Grilled cheese is definitely my favorite food to pair with tomato soup! Making it with sourdough and raw cheese make for the best and most nourishing sandwich.
- Crackers, such as my sourdough cracker, are a great pairing too.
- Top the soup with some shredded cheese, like raw cheddar. Azure Standard has the best raw cheddar!
- For added protein, top the tomato soup with shredded chicken or cooked ground beef. This would be a great way to us up small portions of leftovers that are hanging out in the frig.
