Gelatin gummies are a breeze to make and provide some great health benefits for your gut.
What kid doesn’t love gummies? Heck, I’m 41 and I still love them! They are fruity, chewing, and plain delicious!
The trouble with most commercially made gummies or fruit snacks is that they are high in processed sugar. Oftentimes, that sugar is high fructose corn syrup. Consuming too much processed sugar can lead to diabetes, obesity, and other health issues.
Additionally, store-bought treats contain artificial dyes which are also linked to a host of health concerns like hyperactivity, cancer, tumor growth, and more.
I do not want to risk my family’s or my health by consuming these things.
Luckily, there is a healthier alternative to the sugar-filled gummies in the grocery store.
Making homemade gummies with gelatin is a really simple task. They also offer some really great health benefits.
Why are gelatin gummies good for you?
Homemade gelatin gummies are good for you because of the gelatin and the lack of processed sugars and artificial ingredients, like food dyes.
Gelatin can help improve joint, bone, and gut health. It may improve the appearance of the skin, as well as have an impact on brain function.
Gelatin is beneficial because it is mainly comprised of protein made up of amino acids, all of which have very specific jobs within the body.
Gelatin contains large amounts of the amino acid glycine. Glycine is linked to improve brain function, especially memory and attention.
Glutamic acid is found in gelatin and converted to glutamine in the body. Glutamine has been shown to improve gut health by strengthening the integrity of the gut wall. When the gut wall is strong and intact, gut issues like leaky gut are kept at bay.

Do you need a mold to make gelatin gummies?
Absolutely not! You can use any square dish to make gummies. Once they have chilled and are firm, just cut them into the desired size.
But having some molds on hand makes eating these gut-supportive gummies way more fun!!
Most weeks I just make mine in a square dish because it is quicker. No matter the shape or size, Anghus still asks for them multiple times a day. So do what works best for you and your family!
Ingredients
- Fruit Juice – Choose a juice with no added sugar, any flavor will do. Organic is ideal. My favorite brands are RW Knudsen and Lakewood.
- Gelatin – Grass-fed beef gelatin is needed. I use Great Lakes.
- Natural sweetener – Use either honey or maple syrup to sweeten the gummies. Some juices may be sweet enough on there own and you will not need to add a natural sweetener.
- Lemon juice – Helps to brighten the flavor of the gummies and adds a bit of vitamin C.
What is the process for making gummies?
- Whisk together juice, natural sweetener, and lemon juice in a small pot.
- Sprinkle gelatin on top of juice mixture, whisk, and allow to bloom for 5 minutes.
- Heat over medium-low heat until warm and all the gelatin has dissolved. Do not let the mixture come to a boil, that will denature the gelatin and it will not become firm.
- Pour the mixture into a square baking dish or molds.
- Transfer to refrigerator for at least hour.
- Cut to the desired size, if using a baking dish, or remove from the molds. Store in an airtight container.
How long do homemade gummies last?
Gelatin gummies can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Please keep in mind that these will not hold up to warm temperatures like storebought gummies or fruit snacks. So keeping them cool is necessary if you plan to pack them in your kiddo’s lunch or travel with them.
If they do melt, you can simply pop the container into the frig and the mixture will firm back up.
