Apple chutney is made with a base of apples. Smaller amounts of other fruits may be added to enhance the texture and flavor of the condiment.

Is apple Chutney healthy?

As with most recipes, the ingredients determine whether or not it is healthy.

This apple chutney recipe is free of processed sugars, using just a bit of honey to add sweetness to the dish. The lack of processed sugars makes this a healthy choice.

Ginger is a powerhouse for both flavor and support for the body. It is a warming herb with anti-inflammatory effects.

Ginger has long been used in Chinese medicine to fight off cold, flu, and cough. It is also great for combating nausea.

Adding ginger to the diet has also been shown to improve digestion by activating digestive enzymes.

Apples are a good source of dietary fiber which helps to feed the gut microbiome, resulting in a healthier gut and improved digestive function.

Apples also provide many vitamins and minerals, such as potassium.

Ingredient list

  • Butter – Grass-fed butter will provide the most nutrients. Kerrygold is easy to find.
  • Organic Apples – I like a combination of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or Fuji. Any combination will result in a delish apple chutney! Pick organic because apples are one of the most heavily treated produce in the store.
  • Dried Cranberries – Use unsweetened if you can find them. These apple juice sweetened cranberries are a great option. If not, use what you find.
  • Honey – Local raw honey is ideal. If you do not have a source, check the label and purchase one that is not imported.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – Choose vinegar that still has the mother. This vinegar will provide some probiotics.
  • Ginger – For this apple chutney recipe, fresh ginger is a must!
  • Salt – You want to use unrefined salt. I really like Redmond.
  • Dry Mustard
  • Allspice

What do you eat apple chutney with?

Apple Chutney pairs really well with pork and chicken. I have not tried it myself yet, but I think it would work nicely with turkey too.

The seasoning for the meat can be kept simple with just salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Or it can be a bit more complex with the addition of other spices such as coriander and a small amount of chipotle.

We have even topped our full-fat yogurt with it! It was delicious.

Sereve it warm on top of a bowl of vanilla ice cream for a special treat!
